Oscar has always known coffee. He was born on his family's farm in Sonsón, where he grew up alongside nine siblings surrounded by coffee trees and the rhythms of farm life. But life had other plans.
When he got married, his wife, an engineer, found an opportunity to build her career in Medellín. Oscar made the difficult decision to leave the farm and support her, spending the next eight years working in the textile industry. Even then, he never stopped thinking about coming back. With the money he saved, he bought an avocado farm and spent almost every weekend in Sonsón, working the land he knew he wanted to return to one day.
That opportunity came during the pandemic. As remote work became possible, Oscar and his wife decided it was time to move back home, care for the family farm, and dedicate themselves fully to agriculture. By then, they had both a coffee farm and an avocado farm, and a new chapter was just beginning.
Soon after returning, Oscar met Bayron Arcila, who introduced him to specialty coffee and showed him a different way of thinking about quality, fermentation, and the value of his work. We met Oscar in 2023, and since then we've been learning together. Every harvest has been another step forward—trying new ideas, refining processes, and discovering what his farm is capable of producing.
Oscar's story reminds us that sometimes the path back home is exactly what leads you forward.
